GLOSSARY THAT USED IN ‘MY CAMPUS’
Ps : the meaning of the glossary was taken from campus’ people and the other from TOEFL book. If there are more glossary, you can add it in comment.
ACCOUNT : (n) student’s own “account”. Every information about the student, wheter the personal information, academic information, even financial/billed information.
ADD/DROP : (v) student can ADD (take) the class/subjct they want for the current semester, or DROP it when they want to cancel.
ADVICOR : (n) general meaning : a person who helps students make decisions about their academic programs. MC’s meaning : a person/teacher who helps student in making their thesis and while defending it.
APPROVE : (n) or approvement. One of the most thing in my campus. It will be your “password” to go on in your school activity. You can’t go on until you get the approvement with word “APPROVED” complete with the ‘Red Ink’. From ‘BO’ (Bussiness Office) for your financial, from ‘Dean’ for your subject registration, from ‘Dormintory’ or ‘Vice President 3’ for ‘outsider’. Even to publish an announcement.
ASSIGNMENT : (n) work that must be done as part of the requirements for a class. In other word ; home work.
BRAINSTORMING : (n) in my campus it is like a test, the teacher asking you to read and study about a topic or chapter and in the next meeting he will pick/choose a student randomly to answer his question.
CAFETARIA : (n) general meaning : a restaurant where students can SELECT FOOD from several CHOICES and carry their meals on TRAYS to their tables. In MC meaning : a dinning room where student can eat the FOOD BASED ON THE SCHEDULE with the SAME MENU everyweek, NO CHOICES, and carry their meals on TRAYS to their tables.
CAMPUS DAY : (n) the freeday in my campus. We go to vacation to celebrate it.
CHAPEL PROGRAM : (n) the official general meeting of every student based on their faculty.
CHAPTER : (n) BAB (in Indonesia)
CHARGE : (n) a fee or bill that listed in the student’s account.
CHEATING : (n) a dishonest act. The punisment sometimes will be ; failed in the exam or even drop from the subject.
CLASS : (n) the meeting place and the content of a course. In my campus the place called GK1 and GK2 (Gedung Kuliah), GA(Gedung Administrasi), and English and Computer Lab.
COMMITTEE : (n) a group of proffessors who guide a graduate students program and approve the thesis or dissertation. In MC; they also the people who made the decision and rules.
COPY CENTER : (n) the center of photocopy.
COURSE OUTLINE : (n) the form/paper/term from theacer about the requirenment, rules, and grading system of their subject. Sometime’s called HANDOUT.
CULTURE NIGTH : (n) the night of the ceremony of celebration where the student perfome all of the culture in Indonesia. Representing their own hometown.
DEAN : (n) general meaning : an administrator who ranks above a department chair and below a vice president. In MC; they are the headmaster of a faculty.
DEFENSE : (v) the proccess where the senior defending his/her thesis, while the Prof/teacher judging.
DEPARTMENT : (n) a division of a college organized by subject. Other word : faculty.
DORM : (n) an abbreviation for dormitory ; student’s place inside the campus.
DROP : (v) to withdraw from a course.
DROP OUT : (v) to withdraw from a college or univesity.
ECONOMIC’S DAY : (n) the day of Fac of Eco/ Economics’ students. There will be a seminar sometimes.
ELECTIVE (course) : (n, adj) an optional academic course. Sometimes used for exchange with thesis course (if the student dont’ want to make a thesis).
EXAM : (n, adj) an abbreviation for examination.
FINAL (exam) : (n) the last exam of an academic course.
GATE : (n) pintu gerbang pembatas campus dan dunia luar.. hihih.. especially for the dorm student. If they want to cross the gate, they should get permission firstly from the head dorm, and their should write down their name in the ‘go outside’ list. >
G.P.A : (n) abbreviation for Grade Point Average ; a scale, usually 0-4, on which grades are calculated.
GRADES : (n) a standard number or letter indicating a student’s level of performance.
INCOMPLETE : (n) a grade in a course that confessing the student did not completing the requirements, allows students to complete requirements the following term.
LABOR STUDENT : (n,s) student that working before or even while their doing shool, to pay their fee.
LONG-WEEKEND : (v) longer than weekend. More than 2 days.
MAJOR : (n) a field of study chosen as an academic specialty.
MAKEUP TEST : (n) a test taken after the date of the original adm.
MARRIED STUDENT : (s) the student that are already marry.
MID/MIDTERM : (n) an exam that is given in the middle of the term.
MINOR : (n) a secondary area of study.
OPEN-BOOK TEST : (n) a test that allow you to open your book. ^^
OUTSIDER : (n,s) the student who lives outside of the campus.
PARLOT : an abbreviation for PARKING LOT; an area for parking.
POP QUIZ : (n) a quiz that is given without notice.
PRE-REQUISITE : (n) a course required before a student is eligible to take a higher-level course.
PROJECT : (n) an assignment that often involves the application of knowledge.
ROOMMATE : (n) a person who shares a room. In MC; they call it ORKAM (ORANG KAMAR).
SIU : (n) an abbreviation for Student Information Unit (student Account).
SENIOR : (n) a fourth-year student.
SUBMIT : (v) the way or the other term of sign up to enroll (in a class).
STORE : (n) the store or mini-super market inside the campus.
STUDENT I.D : (n) a number used for identification at a college.
STUDENT PASSWORD : (n) every student has their own password that used to log in their account and only them know it.
STUDENT COUNCIL : (n) in Indonesia – Senat Facultas -
STUDENT ASSOSSIATION : (n) in Indoesia – Senat Mahasiswa/Besar-
STUDY PERIOD : (n) the period of the dorm student to study. It is after evening worship to 9PM.
SUMMER SCHOOL : (n) school in the summer sessions, which are ussually in June through August.
TEXTBOOK : (n) a book that is used for a course.
TRANSCRIPT : (n) a printed copy of a student’s grades.
TUTOR : (n) a private (not always) instructor/guide in studing, often another student.
WP : (v) an abbreviation for Withdrawing Pass..? (not really sure^^). The grade given to a student
who Drop the subject within the due date for Dropping subject. It will be recognized as pass or have another reason to Drop (not because failed).
WF : (v) an abbreviation for Withdrawing Failed..? (still not sure>.
WEEKEND : (v) just a short weekend. Not more than 2 days.
